Why we need you

Spectrum People provides a range of activities to support vulnerable people across Wakefield district. We need support with organising and running the activities. This general volunteer role will include helping design activities and how these will best suit service users and will involve the volunteer in meetings, discussion groups, and sourcing input from other service users.

This volunteer support provides successful applicants with an opportunity to develop their experience and skills, in addition to helping provide peer support to service users. The General Volunteer role in particular secures volunteer and service user input to the development of all Spectrum People activities and will be key in developing communication between service users and Spectrum People.

What are the main tasks and activities?

  • Input to design of activities eg location, running times, access, amenities needed
  • Sourcing service user input to contribute to design of activities
  • Supporting communication between Spectrum People staff and vulnerable individuals (as appropriate)
  • Refer enquiries to the appropriate member of staff if someone needs further help.
  • Work within the policies and procedures of the service, such as confidentiality and safeguarding.

What skills and experience do I need?

  • Friendly, polite, outgoing and open minded
  • Ability to approach a wide variety of clients in a confident and professional manner
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Good literacy skill
  • Willingness to work as part of a small team
  • Enthusiastic, reliable and trustworthy
  • Understanding of  professional boundaries,  policies and procedures
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure
  • It is beneficial if you have completed treatment with an Alcohol Service and can therefore empathise with clients.

What support will I be given?

  • Induction into Spectrum People  and any relevant training for the role
  • Ongoing support from a named member of staff
  • We will pay your out-of-pocket expenses within agreed guidelines.

How much time will I need to give? Whatever time you are able to within the working week. It would be helpful to agree specific days/times (this can be indicated on the application form).

Where is the location? Dependent on the specific task; Spectrum People is located at Spectrum Community Health’s Head Office in central Wakefield and most meetings would take place there. There is a lift and the building is fully accessible.

What is the next step? There is a simple application process. It involves completing an application form and meeting with the Spectrum People Charity Manager for a chat about what the role involves and what you’d like to get out of it. We take up two references and will carry out a standard DBS check for this role.
