To celebrate Sexual Health Week, Spectrum is spotlighting Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and exploring ways that we can support teachers, parents and young people in recognising the value of RSE.
We believe passionately that everyone has the right to learn about relationships and sex education in a safe and supportive environment, where they feel able to ask questions and seek support. In 2019-20, our RSE facilitators delivered 2,000 face-to-face lessons and had around 57,000 contacts with young people in Wakefield, Barnsley, Wigan and Leigh.
Previously, we have also adapted our RSE Programme for students with special education needs (SEN), delivered RSE in faith schools, in Pupil Referral Units and in a female prison, winning the Pamela Sheridan Award for Sexual Health in 2015.
Throughout Sexual Health Week, Spectrum will be:
- Providing a brief introduction to our RSE Programme and the topics which are covered in our lessons, including relationships, risk, contraception and STIs
- Running a virtual event aimed at supporting teachers to develop confidence in their approach to RSE and in handling conversations with young people about sexual health
- Providing information and support for parents, as well as tackling some common myths around RSE
- Sharing blogs and general reflections on our experience as an RSE provider
Andi Cope, RSE Lead for Spectrum, says, “Relationships and Sex Education is an important subject for all children and young people, as it directly impacts on everyday life. Our programme of lessons is informative, fun, inclusive and sensitive, aiming to offer guidance and support to young people on a range of topics depending on their age. All lessons explore human rights, build resiliency and develop the skills needed to make positive and healthy choices. We look forward to continuing to support schools, young people and parents with their relationship and sex education over the years ahead.”
Sexual Health Week will run from Monday 14th – Sunday 20th September. Find out more about our campaign online by following us on social media @SpectrumSHARP.
