Urgent treatment

Are you are concerned that you or someone you know might need urgent advice for sexual health? You may need urgent treatment for:

  • Unprotected sex
  • Unusual symptoms like increased discharge from the penis or vagina, pain in testicles, bleeding after or during sex or pain during sex

For all urgent treatments we will try our best to give you a same day appointment if you phone our clinics during working hours. Please visit our Find a Clinic page for opening times and contact details across Wakefield, Barnsley, Wigan and Leigh.

If you are unable to call us during working hours and If you can’t wait, please dial 111 for immediate help and advice with any sexual health concern.  

Emergency Contraception

There are two types of Emergency contraception to stop unwanted pregnancy:

  • Contraceptive Pill: Take within 3 or 5 days of unprotected sex (depending on the brand) for it to be effective – the sooner you take it the more effective it’ll be.

Available from our sexual health clinics and GP surgeries, walk-in centres, pharmacies (some will charge) and A&E

  • IUD: Can be fitted up to 5 days after unprotected sex, or up to 5 days after the earliest time you could have ovulated, for it to be effective

If you have had unprotected sex there is a risk of pregnancy and so please contact our clinics as soon as possible. If you are unable to call us during working hours and If you can’t wait, please dial 111 for immediate help and advice with any sexual health concern.
