Partnership ‘toddler group’ brings community together

Spectrum People has successfully launched a Toddler Group as the latest of our intergenerational projects, working in partnership with Yorkshire Housing and Think Cre8tive CIC.

Based at Sherwood Court Extra Care Centre in Kettlethorpe, the toddler group takes place every Tuesday (9:15am-11:15am) and brings together local families and older residents to take part in fun interactive activities including crafts, music and play. The project is also supported by student volunteers from Kettlethorpe High School, who can gain work experience and volunteering time through the group.

Impact

Tina Dransfield, our project facilitator, said: “There are many benefits of intergenerational work like this toddler group. For residents, it can help to reduce loneliness and social isolation whilst toddlers get the benefit of being around more mature people and learning from this social interaction. It gives me a real buzz seeing the children interacting with older generations and the smiles they share.”

Think Cre8tive Group CIC are providing music sessions as part of the group. Melanie Cossins said: “We are thrilled to have been given funding by Nova Wakefield to provide music sessions for residents, including families and carers. Joining forces with Spectrum People means that both young and old get to interact through music and play in an intergenerational setting. It is

a fantastic project and I hope that the toddler group continues to go from strength to strength. Seeing the joy on everyone’s faces makes it all worth-while.”

Get involved

The toddler group is in its infancy and we would love parents with young children to join us. If you would like to donate craft materials, good quality toys and games – or to get involved with the group – please call Tina Dransfield on 01924 311400 or  contact Sherwood Court on 01924 249474.

Yorkshire Housing’s Sherwood Court is warm and inviting with easy access for pushchairs, everything is on one level and it is a safe space. A donation of £1 is requested from parent/carers attending the toddler group to cover the cost of refreshments. Spaces for the playgroup are limited and it is strongly advised for people to ring Carol, acting manager of Sherwood Court, to check availability.

Spectrum People also hold another toddler group, Thursdays 9.15–11.15am, Hatfeild Court, Wakefield.
