Samantha

What is your name and which Apprenticeship are you doing?
I’m Samantha, I’m 33, currently doing Nursing Associate apprenticeship which is a Foundation Degree for 2 years

Why did you choose your specific apprenticeship?
I chose this course because I want to progress in my current role, and hopefully go on to do nursing. By completing this course, I would only need to do a ‘top up’ course in nursing (which is 1.5 years) to then be a qualified RGN.

Was there any decision between the apprenticeship route and any other route?
If I did not do an apprenticeship I would have to leave work/be seconded and attend university full time.

What has been your proudest achievement on your apprenticeship to date?
My proudest moment was passing my first assignment, as I have not written academically since leaving school!

Has your work changed as a result of COVID-19?
There have been many changes due to COVID and adapting to the new way of working has been a challenge.

How do you see your apprenticeship helping you in your career progression?
I want to progress to be a qualified nurse, so by completing this apprenticeship it puts me on the right path and is the first part of my career journey.

What would your advice be to anyone thinking about doing an apprenticeship?
I would say ‘do it’! You are never too old to start and learn. This course is not easy, but I believe it will be worth it once I graduate. The apprenticeship route gave me the opportunity to finally achieve my goals in life and further my career. Without the apprenticeship, I don’t know when/if I would have been able to achieve this.
