Lesley

What is your name and which Apprenticeship are you doing?
I’m Lesley and I’m doing the Nursing Associate Apprenticeship Degree, it’s two years long and I am currently 49! (never too old to learn)

Why did you choose that Apprenticeship?
I wanted to do the course for career progression, to challenge myself to study and get a degree – better late than never at all.

Was there any decision between the Apprenticeship route and any other route? No, the Apprenticeship was offered/supported via a University

What has been your proudest achievement on your apprenticeship to date?
Passing my first assignment was my proudest achievement after around 32 years away from school!

What has work been like since the COVID-19 outbreak, and how has your work changed because of it? Work has been busy and stressful; it has been all hands-on deck so to speak and working as one big team.

How do you see your apprenticeship helping you in your career progression?
The apprenticeship will give me the ability to progress from Band 3 to 4 and hopefully, after another 18 months, training to go on to do my nurse training

What would your advice be to anyone thinking about doing an apprenticeship? Just do it! Teesside Uni have been really helpful and have developed our sessions all on TEAMS due to COVID. (Teesside Uni have also just won Nursing Associate Training Provider of the Year at last year’s Nursing Times Awards).

We are already working and learning on the job, this enables you to do a degree and have no Uni debt at the end! We will also have a more skilled workforce at the end of the day to support our nursing teams.
