A New Love for Substance Misuse Services

It’s cheers all round for North Yorkshire Horizons (NYH), Clinical Lead, Emma who has donned her cape and joined our #HiddenHeroes squad.

Emma joined Spectrum in Oct 2014 as a Nurse Prescriber in Selby, and since this she has gone on to help transform substance misuse services for our patients. In April 2018, Emma stepped into the role of Clinical Lead when sadly, our previous leader Karen stepped down due to ill health.

From the beginning, Emma had rather large shoes to fill. Karen was a much-loved member of the team who was part the original cohort of staff who joined Spectrum at the very beginning, so fulfilling this role was always going to be a challenge.

Since commencing this position, Emma has managed the team through some very tricky times. However, her calm, sensitive and professional manner has been noticed by all her colleagues. She has worked hard to keep team morale high despite continuing bad news around Karen’s health, recruitment difficulties and now the COVID-19 pandemic.

The team at NYH are currently contending with low staffing levels due to the pandemic. Their service coverage offering equates to an area the size of Cyprus, which is hard work for small team. Emma has never grumbled about this instead she has personally taken on the additional workload and carried out the extra hours required going above and beyond.Emma is known for her kindness and often travels miles out of her way to enable prescriptions for service users who have had the need to relocate due to safeguarding issues. The support she provides to service users and her team is second to none.

Recently she has encouraged and supported a member of staff who showed an interest in becoming a nurse to sign up to an access course. She’s further gone on to arranging for them to enroll into a nursing degree once completed.
