Today, on 5th July 2022, the NHS marks 74 years of service.

As part of the birthday celebrations, Spectrum is celebrating our roots in the NHS, our incredible staff and showcasing some of our innovative work.

Our organisation started out as WISMS (Wakefield Integrated Substance Misuse Service) in 2003, under NHS Wakefield District Primary Care Primary Care Trust and a small team of 13. On 1st April 2011, Spectrum began with around 100 staff working to a single contract, spread across three main operating services supported by a small Head Office team; CEO Dr Linda Harris OBE was inspired by the social enterprise and employee ownership model’s ability to add value and deliver more to patients and staff alike.

In the 11 years since being spun out from the NHS, Spectrum has grown in footprint and reputation, with an impressive portfolio – including being the lead provider of healthcare in 18 prisons across the North of England.

But as the theme of this year’s birthday stresses, it’s the staff that make the NHS.
