Dr Linda Harris, Chief Executive of Spectrum Community Health, is embarking on a ‘Tour de UK’ to raise support for ‘Come Dine with Spectrum’, a local project that helps adults who are recovering from addiction to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
Dr Harris and her husband will cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats, travelling more than 990 miles over 14 days. She is hoping to raise awareness to support Come Dine with Spectrum which helps vulnerable adults shop for and cook healthy meals. Although both are keen cyclers, this is the first time that the couple have cycled this kind of distance before and the endeavour promises to be quite challenging.
Come Dine with Spectrum is part of Spectrum People, a volunteering arm of Spectrum Community Health. Based loosely on the popular TV programme, it’s a weekly gathering where volunteers come together with people who are recovering from addiction. Here they cook and offer a relaxed setting for a social gathering where volunteers can also offer help and advice about shopping on a budget and cooking healthy meals. This includes going shopping for key ingredients, cooking and sharing a meal.
Dr Harris comments: “Although I have a tough challenge ahead I’m really looking forward to the journey and to raising awareness and support for a project which I know is making a real difference and I hope to become mainstream and therefore run weekly.” “The Come Dine with Spectrum project is about providing a healthy nutritious meal in a welcoming environment, whilst also promoting a way of living that will help our service users during and beyond their recovery.
Setting out on 4th August Dr Harris will be providing updates from her journey on the Spectrum blog and through her twitter feed – @lindaha123.
