Being with someone should be a positive experience. Of course all relationships have their ups and downs and it won’t be romance and roses every day. But you should feel good about yourself and each other.

A positive relationship is one based on respect, trust, honesty, support, fairness and good communication.

Here are some top tips for a happy relationship:

  • listen to one another
  • be honest and open with one another
  • have fun together
  • be kind to one another
  • respect each other’s opinions

A positive relationship is one that you should feel safe in and be able to go at your own pace including sexually. You should be able to make decisions together and be able to disagree with each other. You should each be able to have the freedom to do your own thing with time and space to see your friends.

If you are in a relationship where you constantly feel bad, low or upset it might be time to move on.

No-one has the right to hurt you emotionally or physically or make you do something that feels wrong.
